PFDs / Bouyancy Vests

PFD Type 1 -Australian Standard AS1512-Standards Australia A PFD Type 1 garment is one that provides a high level of buoyancy, maintaining the wearer in a safe floating position, ie. with the body inclined backwards from the vertical with the nose and mouth clear of the water. PFD type 1 jackets can make it awkward to move about freely, or swim for any distance while wearing one. Thy are generally recommended for use in pleasure boats which may venture beyond sheltered waters or where the wearer is at risk of sustaining injury which may impair the ability to swim. PFD Type 2 -Australian Standard AS1499-Standards Australia A PFD Type 2 garment is one that provides sufficient buoyancy to assist the wearer to maintain his or her head above water (but not as much as a PFD Type 1). It is less bulky than a PFD Type 1, making it more suitable for applications where the wearer needs to move around or swim. A PFD Type 2 is generally recommended for dinghy or board sailors, water skiers and canoeists etc. who are required to wear a PFD for extended periods of time. Some PFD 2's include specific design features to appeal to the particular activity. 60% of the jacket must be in approved 'safety colours'. PFD Type 3 -Australian Standard AS2260-Standards Australia A PFD Type 3 garment is one that provides a similar amount of buoyancy to that of a PFD Type 2, but is permitted to carry a wider range of colours. PFD Type 3's are popular with water skiers and jet skiers in sheltered waters where assistance is readily at hand
