Square Bump Thruster designed by Simon Jones as featured in the 2010 Board Bible.
“I’ve been doing a lot of single fins in the past few years, and just in the past 18 months or so I’ve been having a bit of a dig around in that early ’80s kind of era. Working with 1970s ideas, your mind starts to wander… I’d see guys struggling to ride thinner, conventional boards and think how much I’d like to see people flying out on the face and doing a big long carving sort of turn.
The idea here was to offer a bit more foam – not so much to nurse someone who was learning to surf as to show a better sort of surfer how they could find other lines in the wave just by being able to catch a wave earlier. The lower entry rocker does that, but it can be difficult to blend with a more modern tail rocker. Recently I’ve just been writing the length measurement on boards, not all the other measurements, because it’s important for people to relate to how it feels, not so much to the numbers.”
Damage: Minimal deck denting.
Suited to: Cruisy “soul” surfing with a bit of snap and length in headhigh-plus surf, points especially.
Bobby joined the DHD team in 08 and Darren has been working on refining his model since. A very similar rocker to the MF Pro, but with a slightly flatter tail and narrower nose. The bobby board is the next level in high performance surf board design. In 09 we didn't change a lot. Now that Bobby has been working me with more for a while, our slight changes have refined the model and as a result the Bobby Pro is now more user friendly for the everyday surfer. It was a great result in Tahiti and a great measure to where we are at with his boards. In waves like Tahiti you need to be confident with your equipment and Bobby winning was a rewarding result for us both.
"Bobby's ultimate when the waves are small."
After working together for over a year, refining Bobby's performance boards, Bobby and DH decided it was time to have some fun. So they created the 'Bobby Monster'. A small wave board designed for Bobby to have some fun in the conditions he would normally not bother surfing. A little wider in the nose and tail with a rounded pin and a little more thickness in the rail. The Bobby Monster is a fun, fast board with great planing speed. Quick release off the top and on rail, creates a board that opens up Bobby's surfing with some carving turns as well as top to bottom power surfing. A perfect board for those that want to have some fun in smaller waves whilst still pushing the performance of their equipment and surfing. Bobby rides a 5'10, 18 1/2, 2 5/16 and can be ridden as a thruster or quad fin.
