A dramatic flight of fancy, or at least that’s how it seemed. The Screwdriver was designed to compete with the sudden appearance of Reno Abellira’s Fish. The ‘Driver was really two boards in one: a loose wide-tail planer in front of the giant wing, and a harsh long line driver when the whole rail line of the board was engaged. Like the Hawaiian Stinger, that combination of tail bite and forward planing area let a single- fin duel with the Fish. Strongly influenced by Sydney shaper Rodney Ball, who’d been working on getting snow-ski flex into his tails by using pure laminates in the last two feet of the tail.
